Did 'Bachelor' Contestant Tayshia Adams Already Have a Boyfriend?

The premise of The Bachelor is pretty straightforward. One man and a bevy of women seeking true love connect over the course of three months until the bachelor in question makes a choice. Season 23 of The Bachelor followed the same formula of course, but this season saw an extreme amount of drama, culminating in the bachelor, Colton Underwood, hopping a fence and running away from the show.

So much of Underwood’s anxiety came from the idea that certain contestants weren’t truly on the show to find love and make a commitment. Underwood and several of the contestants expressed concerns about the validity of some of the women’s intentions. And perhaps their concerns weren’t that far off. It turns out that contestant Tayshia Adams might have already had a boyfriend when she joined the show.

Who is Tayshia Adams?

Adams is a 28-year-old phlebotomist from California and was one of the final three on Underwood’s season of The Bachelor. Unfortunately, Underwood had already fallen hard for Cassie Randolph, and couldn’t seem to shake his crush. He told Adams as much before letting her know that she wouldn’t be getting the final rose.

Adams seemed to handle Underwood’s confession with grace, leaving many fans thinking that perhaps she was the more mature of the two. Underwood didn’t exactly behave with tact in the situation.

The secret boyfriend, revealed

Even if she was dumped, it seems Adams might not have that much trouble finding romance in her personal life. It turns out that she was in a very serious relationship just before coming onto The Bachelor. In fact, she may have ended her relationship specifically for The Bachelor, which does call some of her intentions into question.

A source informed Us Weekly that Adams was “exclusively dating” her now ex-boyfriend Chase Olswang. Apparently, they were together right up until the night that Adams left to film The Bachelor. The two dated for 10 months, though Adams felt unsure about commitment at the time, having just gone through a divorce.

However, it seems as if their relationship got serious pretty fast, despite Adams’ concerns. It seems the two had started discussing engagement and marriage before Adams left for the show. The source said to Us Weekly, “It’s a messed-up situation. He was in love with her. He’s not anymore, but he still loves her.”

Oslwang told Us Weekly, “… before she ended up deciding to leave [for The Bachelor], because she still wasn’t really sure if she was going to go on the show or not,” he continued. “She was still back and forth … she wasn’t sure. As it got closer, I could kind of see changes between us and I could kind of tell that she was leaning toward going. I don’t know all of the exact reasons for that.”

It seems the two are split for good, though they maintain an amicable relationship. “There is an open line of communication. We’re there for each other if we need to be, but things have changed quite a bit since she’s come back,” explained Oslwang.

Not the last time

This probably wasn’t the first time something like this has happened, and it definitely wasn’t the last. Already on Hannah Brown’s season of The Bachelorette, there’s been controversy over a contestant who had a girlfriend back home during the show.

Demi Burnett was able to suss out that contestant Scott had a girlfriend, and brought the information to Brown. Brown confronted Scott and told him it was time to go.

“You are such a jerk!…I’m done with this! There’s no reason for you to be here if you’re not serious. It’s time for you to head out,” said Brown.
