Anne Hegerty opens up on debt troubles and how The Chase helped her ‘I was struggling’

The Chase star Anne Hegerty, 62, has reflected on a time she struggled to pay rent on her home, until a friend stepped in to get her out of the situation.

Recalling the difficult time, she explained: “What happened was that my flat in Manchester is a housing association flat – I own half of it and rent the other half – and I hadn’t been keeping up with my rent.

“The woman in charge of making sure people do that, knocked on the door, and she sort of just basically walked in and closed the door behind me and said ‘Right, we are going to get this sorted out’.”

Anne, who was diagnosed with Autism in her mid-forties, went on to thank her social worker Jeff McKenzie for helping her and also praised the show for changing her life.

“He saved my life and he was far more competent and efficient than I was,” she added on Kate Thornton’s podcast White Wine Question Time.

The quizmaster credited Jeff for dealing with companies that she owed money to and helped her get back on her feet.

“He was brilliant, she added.

Anne joined The Chase in 2010 and she is also a chaser on the Australian version of the show.

The Governess star credited the show for changing her life for the better.

She said of her current role: “I mean, this really is the thing that has changed my life.

“I’d had to go through four separate auditions and was kind of on tenterhooks about it.

“I don’t think I’ve ever done anything that has made so much of a difference in my life as actually getting the job on The Chase, frankly.”

Ahead of her stint on The Chase, worked as an academic proof-reader, but admitted she found it difficult to keep up with the paperwork which came with it.

“I wasn’t good at really was keeping up with the paperwork,” she explained. “I’ve never been good at multitasking. I can’t really juggle things.”
