Lily Allen's husband David Harbour has said that becoming a stepfather to her two daughters has given him a "new love" he "never had."

The 46 year old and Lily, 36, surprised fans when they announced they had tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony in September 2020.

Stranger Things actor David and singer Lily's union meant he became stepfather to Ethel Mary, nine, and Marnie Rose, eight, who Lily shares with ex-husband Sam Cooper.

David has now opened up on the bond he shares with the little girls, telling Ellen DeGeneres on her US talk show: "They're British and I'm this cheese-fed American man and they really do like the fact they have an extra jungle gym.

"They crawl all over me, they make it their job to try to hurt me as much as they can. My lower back is destroyed."

However, he did go on to share that he "loves" his relationship with Ethel and Marnie and how they have made him understand why people want children.

He continued: "I have never experienced this kind of – I was always a single guy, who has been a bachelor for a long time, I've been an artist, I wanted to travel the world and do my work.

"And I never really wanted to have kids. And I get it now, why everybody has kids. Because it's kind of like the meaning of life, you pass the torch to these other individuals.

"You love them more than you could ever love yourself, and I never thought that was possible with anyone, I love myself a lot.

"But it's such a beautiful thing. My heart is just broken wide open and I have a new love I never had."

Earlier this year, The Fear singer Lily announced she was celebrating 18 months of sobriety.

The star speaks candidly about her previous experiences with drugs and alcohol and says she has been happily sober since the summer of 2019.

She collected her motivational keyring from Narcotics Anonymous, and it reads: "Clean & Serene for eighteen months."

Lily posted a selfie on Instagram and poked her tongue out at the camera.

She captioned the shot: "18 months clean and sober today. Would recommend!"
