Everyone Is Upset That Adam Sandler Didn’t Get an Oscar Nomination

Look, there’s no way to tip-toe around the issue here. Adam Sandler wasn’t nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in Uncut Gems this morning, and he really deserved to. Like, really, really deserved to. He came out here in the year 2019, dialed into everything that he’s ever done in his career before, dialed the intensity up to 11, and gave a career-best performance in a million-miles-a-minute thriller. And many of your favorite actors and directors think so, too, reacting online to the Sandman’s Oscar snub with great rage.

Sandler had previously threatened (jokingly, we think) that if he didn’t win the Oscar for Gems that he would make a movie ‘so bad on purpose.’ Well, now that he hasn’t even be nominated, we’re all going to have to take a pretty hard look in the mirror at where we’re at. Sandler himself handled the snub well, responding on Twitter with a joke about how he can finally stop dressing up for these fancy events. “Bad news: Sandman gets no love from the Academy.Good news: Sandman can stop wearing suits. Congrats to all my friends who got nominated, especially Mama,” he wrote, tagging Kathy Bates in his tweet.

The ‘Mama’ refers not to his own actual mom, but rather his on-screen Waterboy mom, Kathy Bates. Bates, who received her fourth Oscar nomination for her role in Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell, responded to Sandler’s tweet in character, as Mama from The Waterboy. “I love you my Bobby Boucher!!! You was robbed!! But Mama loves you!!! I learned a new urban slang word for you! You da GOAT!! Not the one we eat at home, Son,” she wrote.

Can we nominate this interaction for an Oscar? Is it too late?

Josh and Benny Safdie, who directed Uncut Gems (and share a Twitter account) responded to Sandler’s tweet, letting him know how much they appreciate all that he put into their film.

Love you sandman

Rian Johnson, who got his (much deserved) first Academy Award nomination for Best Screenplay for Knives Out, is also team Gems, telling his one million Twitter followers to stop whatever they’re doing and go see Sandler on a big screen.

“There are so many great things to see right now but if you haven’t caught @uncutgems GET OUT AND SEE IT, it’s an experience like nothing else and Sandler gives a stone cold iconic performance,” the Star Wars: The Last Jedi director wrote.” It’s one of those where years from now you’ll be bragging “I saw it when it came out.””

It’s really something special, brace yourself for an experience.

Stranger Things star Joe Keery (who directly referenced the film), The Office star Jenna Fischer, and Frozen‘s Josh Gad also chimed in to tell Sandler that he deserved one of the five Best Actor slots:

Ratner cannot be touched

I loved Uncut Gems. You and all of the performances, the writing, directing, camera, sound design and sound editing. Loved this movie.

You were robbed

James L. Brooks, who directed Sandler in Spanglish and is also an Academy Award winner for Terms of Endearment and is a co-creator of The Simpsons, spoke out on his own voilition about just how good Sandler, and the film itself, was. “Been working hard…no twittering but, nominations aside, I must step briefly from my cave to proclaim that Adam Sandler’s performance in Uncut Gems is simply amazing and the direction of that film literally breathtaking.Okay, Back to the cave,” the 79-year-old director and producer wrote.

Even Sandler’s frequent co-star Henry Winkler (another from The Waterboy!) felt the need to tell everyone just how good his pal is in Gems. “Adam Sandler”s performance was absolutely! Oscar worthy,” the Barry star wrote.

So, there’s no Oscar nomination coming this year for Sandler this year. But on the bright side, Uncut Gems is still playing in theaters, so you can go check it out if you haven’t yet. And if you have, well you can go for a second (or third) time.
