HRVY, 22, has spoken out on the so-called Strictly curse, which is believed to affect its contestants’ love lives. The singer, who participated in the 2020 edition of the hit BBC show, found himself surrounded by speculation regarding his relationship with EastEnders actress Maisie Smith, 19.

However, he stressed that he and his co-star were “just good mates” and that it was “funny” to be at the centre of such rumours.

Offering his explanation for the infamous Strictly curse, HRVY said: “I think it’s real, not on me, but I reckon it’s real.

“It’s not like it’s not cursed, maybe a light curse, a tiny bit, from my experience, obviously definitely not,” he told the Daily Star.

He added: “I know that from previous years, it really is.”

The star was then asked whether he fuelled fans’ theories about him and Maisie.

He explained: “A little bit, yeah, I didn’t play into it but the whole thing with me and Maisie, we became really good friends on the show and apparently I was dating her.

“I saw the other day about ‘HRVY and Maisie split in December’, I was like ‘I don’t think we were ever together’.

“We were never together, we were just mates.

“It was almost funny to watch it happen, I suppose.

“The thing is, you can deny it but then it’s just like ‘let people think, let people speculate’, it’s all part of the fun, nobody likes to admit it but it’s true.”

HRVY and Maisie became friends during last year’s edition of the show, in which he had been paired with professional dancer Janette Manrara.

But HRVY previously confessed the pair were told off by bosses for getting too close on the programme.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, contestants had to stay two metres apart at all times.

HRVY recounted: “I just think we were maybe slightly closer than two metres while we were talking.

“The BBC told us off and everything is all good and everyone is trying their best to maintain all the rules and regulations.”

During the show, Maisie admitted she had been partaking in “harmless” flirting.

She told OK! Magazine: “I’ve not been thinking about boys at the moment.

“I haven’t had time,” Maisie explained.

“I’ve been liking getting to know him.”

Maisie was paired with Spanish pro dancer Gorka Marquez.
