Kate Garraway says first night out since pandemic began is strange without Derek

Kate Garraway has been snapped smiling away on the red carpet as she enjoyed her first evening out since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Good Morning Britain host headed out for a well-deserved evening of fun to watch the opening night of Wonderville, a new magic and illusion show, at the Palace Theatre in London.

She admitted that it was ‘strange’ attending the event without her husband Derek Draper, who is recovering after his battle with Covid-19.

Sporting a gorgeous blue maxi dress, Kate smiled on the red carpet and said at the event: ‘It’s our first time out since February 2020 so we are really excited, and this is a date that has sprung up because it was going to happen a few weeks ago and then it didn’t happen and then we just thought, “Let’s go for it” – so very exciting.’

The 54-year-old added: ‘It was very strange leaving [Derek] tonight to come out because he is a big fan of magic, but it is not possible at the moment so we just said next time and see him when we get back.’

Stars including Love Island’s Amy Hart and radio star Debbie McGee also attended the opening night.

Derek battled Covid-19 in intensive care for a year and was able to return home in April.

The 53-year-old suffered from rare brain inflammation and the virus attacked his lungs, heart, kidneys, liver and pancreas, with doctors saying that he had the worst Covid-19 infection of any surviving patient.

Kate recently explained that, while there are definitely some positives with his recovery, there are still ‘huge challenges ahead’.

She said on Good Morning Britain: ‘He’s very up and down. We’re certainly a long way out of the woods.’

The presenter added: ‘Being home has meant we’ve seen some things improve, definitely having the family around, having the children around has provided stimulation and the problem is you latch onto the positives – which is good, because you have to.

‘But there’s absolutely no doubt that there’s huge challenges ahead.’
