Kate Garraway speaks out on ‘horrendous’ year and ‘loneliness’ amid husband’s Covid battle

GMB: Kate Garraway opens up on 'reality' of coronavirus

Kate Garraway, 53, has admitted she has found this year “horrendous” after her husband Derek Draper was placed in an induced coma back in March after contracting coronavirus. The GMB host noted that many had dealt with “loneliness and isolation” more than ever before, as lockdown saw millions forced to stay home.

Kate and her colleague Ben Shepherd are now set to honour those who dedicated their time to others in 2020 with GMB’s 1 Million Minutes Awards.

Kate explained: “It has been so incredible to see people give their valuable free time to help others in need, especially during what has been a horrendous and difficult year.

“We have seen more loneliness and isolation than ever before.

“It’s been a real mixture of seeing wonderful communities and people helping each other in amazing ways coupled with that loneliness at the core of it.”

The Good Morning Britain star added: “Never before have we needed the goodwill of the British people to get us through 2020.

“The extraordinary acts of kindness reflect this brilliantly, and I guarantee that our winners will lift everyone up.”

Kate’s longtime colleague and friend Ben has shared that his admiration toward her only grows as she continues to work during this difficult time for her family.

“There is not a moment when I’m working with her where that admiration tarnishes,” said Ben.

“Kate is so brilliant and professional and we have fun so you sometimes forget the relentless journey that they are on at the moment.

“We all want to know what the outcome is going to be and that is the hardest thing, not knowing.

“In 2021, I will undoubtedly be more optimistic and positive, because of my friendship with Kate and how much I admire her.”

Lorraine Kelly also shared a similar sentiment to Ben, as she retweeted an article that announced Kate’s husband Derek had “spoken for the first time” since being hospitalised

She typed in view of her 616,000 followers: “I continue to be in awe of @kategarraway – and her courage, strength and grace during the worst of times.

“Now at last a glimmer of hope,” Lorraine added.

Underneathfans of Kate shared their prayers and well-wishes for the GMB host.

One wrote: “She’s such a strong lady, and has so much strength and love being sent her way.  Praying for a full recovery for Derek.”

A second replied: “Oh my goodness, I was so scared to read this at first saw it but what lovely news to wake up to. Keep fighting Derek & sending lots of love to you all. Kate you are amazing xxx.”

A third commented: “Couldn’t have put it better, Lorraine. Strength and Grace – exactly this. Let’s hope this is the turning point for them.”

A fourth said: “This is the most wonderful news. Mal and I are so pleased at this progress but know how slow the recovery is and the difficult road ahead. But this certainly does give hope to Kate and her children that he will be home with them again. Lots of love.”

GMB’s 1 Million Minutes Awards air on December 17, 2020.
