The Duchess of Sussex has been accused of "throwing Kate Middleton under a bus" during her and Prince Harry's tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in early March.

Royal author Penny Junor also claimed the comments Meghan Markle, 39, made about Kate during the chat most likely angered her husband Prince William too.

Meghan opened up about reports of a rift between herself and the Duchess of Cambridge, also 39, and said the press wanted "a hero and a villain" in the interview.

She claimed that despite reports that Meghan was the one who drove Kate to tears days before her nuptials to Harry, it was in fact the other way around.

When asked by Oprah about the tabloids' claims Meghan had made Kate cry days before the royal wedding, the Duchess of Sussex said: “No, the reverse happened.”

She added that she “didn’t want to be disparaging to anyone“ but Kate was “upset about something“ over an issue with a flower girl dress.

The former Suits actress said Kate “owned it and apologised” with a handwritten note and flowers. She added that she “took accountability“ after Meghan was brought to tears but insisted there was no confrontation between the pair.

Now, royal author Penny has claimed Meghan's remarks about the ordeal will have angered 38 year old William as she told Express.co.uk: "I would have thought one of the things William was most cross about was the fact that Meghan threw Kate under the bus.

"It wasn't Harry, but it was his wife, and he must have known that she was going to do that and he clearly hasn't corrected it in any way.

"It depends how Kate is feeling. I must say I would be pretty damn cross."

Prince Harry and Meghan's relationship with the Royal Family has remained strained since their chat aired on 7 March as they made several other claims, including an allegation that a royal family member had raised concerns over the colour of their child's skin.

Oprah has since spoken out about their interview on Nancy O'Dell's Channel on talkshoplive, where the 67 year old said she was surprised by how open Meghan and Harry were.

She explained: "I had no idea that it would have the reverberating impact it has had and continues to have. I did a lot of preparation for that."

Oprah also said she was "surprised" that pregnant Meghan went “all the way there” with her allegations of racism within the Royal Family. Oprah said: "I'm like, 'What? You're going there? You're going all the way there.”

She went on to explain that she had texted Meghan and Harry before the interview to have a joint understanding of their focus of it as she said: "Whenever I'm doing interviews with anybody for anything that is significant, I have a conversation with them before.

"I didn't see Harry and Meghan before but I did text them and say intention is very important to me, tell me what your intention is, so that we can be aligned in our goal. And our shared intention was the truth. They wanted to be able to tell their story and tell it in such a way that allowed them to be as truthful as possible."
