Prince William and Kate Middleton’s police escort hits elderly woman
An elderly woman is in serious condition after being struck by a police motorbike escort for Prince William and Kate Middleton.
The accident happened Monday afternoon as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s convoy was heading from London to Windsor.
The woman, Irene Mayor, 83, was hit by a police outrider that was clearing traffic in front of the couple’s motorcade as it headed to the Knights of the Garter ceremony, The Sun reported.
Witnesses said the cop was driving on the wrong side of the road with his lights flashing when Mayor stepped out.
She was thrown into the air — and left with a broken pelvis and other injuries.
“His bike hit her and she spun round, off her feet and fell badly on the floor,” a witness said. “The officer was devastated. But he was going on the wrong side of the road. It could have been so much worse.”
Mayor, who lives near the site of the accident, is in serious but stable condition, police said.
The royal couple, who learned about the accident after arriving at Windsor, sent flowers to Mayor on Tuesday along with a handwritten note. They hope to visit her in the hospital to apologize, according to The Sun.
“She’s got lots of injuries,” said Mayor’s daughter Fiona. “They are just keeping her stable at the moment.”
