Simon Cowell, 62, has returned to Britain’s Got Talent to oversee auditions on a brand new series of the hit show. But the TV personality left the audience and fellow judges in shock after failing to recognise the English flag.

Simon was reportedly invited by five-year-old Charles to a contest based on their knowledge of flags when filming yesterday.

When shown the St George’s Cross, Simon appeared to confidently believe it was another country’s national banner.

He said: “Oh, I know that — it’s Switzerland.”

Little Britain star and Simon’s fellow judge David Walliams was left astounded by the notorious Mr Nasty’s mistake.

He said: “You idiot. What country are we in now? England.”

The error purportedly left everyone witnessing the scenes at the London Palladium “in stitches,” according to The Sun.

Simon recently proposed to his long-term partner and the mother of his child, Lauren Silverman, 44.

Speaking of the engagement, Simon’s brother, Tony, said their mother would have been “delighted” at the news.

Lauren got in touch with him at 4.30 in the morning to give him the special news.

Tony told Best Magazine: “When I first heard the news… I immediately thought of our mum, Julie.”

“She would have been overjoyed with the news, and it’s sad to think she is not here to see her son finally tie the knot.

“She always wanted him to settle down with a family.”

He continued: “I picture her looking down and saying, ‘And about time, Simon!'”

Simon’s co-star Amanda Holden also spoke out on the news of his engagement, claiming she was given a heads-up beforehand.

The 50-year-old explained during her Heart FM radio show last week that Simon had sent her a text message on Tuesday evening.

Amanda said she was surprised by the message from Simon, which read: “It’s happening.”

She recounted: “Last night we all got the text saying, ‘It’s happening’, and we couldn’t believe it.

“And I knew it would be in the papers today if we got the text last night.

“So I was like ‘oh my goodness!’”

Simon and Lauren have been together since 2013, shortly after the latter’s ex-husband Andrew Silverman filed for divorce in July that same year.
