The Apprentice star escaped plane crash after being told pregnant wife might die

The Apprentice: Lord Sugar fires Thomas Skinner

The Apprentice star Thomas Skinner has revealed that passengers on his flight from North Carolina “all thought we were going to die” after narrowly avoiding a disastrous plane crash.

The businessman’s horrific experience fell on the same day that he was told his pregnant wife might not survive after giving birth to twins.

BBC star Thomas had been rushing back to be by his wife Sinead’s side in hospital, boarding last month’s connecting flight from North Carolina, when his plane only just managed to avoided crashing in Philadelphia.

Speaking on the latest edition of the Matt Haycox Show podcast, released today, Thomas revealed to the entrepreneur and investor: “The pilot said he’d never experienced anything like it in 30 years of flying, it was incredibly scary.

“I’m terrified of flying normally anyway, and you can imagine the hysterics I was in not knowing if I was about to lose my wife as well at the time.”

The flight Thomas had boarded was thrown into chaos due to a mix-up, allowing another plane through as it was about to touch down.

This forced the pilot to abandon landing just 100ft from the ground, leaving screaming passengers fearing for their lives.

“We were about 100ft off the ground and just about to land. I can see cars and people’s faces out of the window, that’s how low we were,” Thomas explained.

“The wheels were out and just as we’re coming into land, the captain gives it ‘Brace!’ I (f*****g) screamed, the whole plane was screaming.

“It was like nothing I’ve ever felt in my life. We were forced into going back up, steeper than a take-off, and all the luggage was falling out of the overhead compartments, people were clinging onto whatever they could grab hold of thinking we were going to die.

“Food and drink was sent flying down the aisles, it was incredibly scary!”

Thomas had been in North Carolina managing a West Ham legends football team when he received the terrible news that his wife Sinead and their unborn twins may not survive after she went into labour.

Sinead was forced to undergo an emergency C-section five weeks before her due date after doctors discovered one of the twins was seriously underweight.

Thomas heard the awful news about labour complications in a phone call from Sinead, which prompted him to leave immediately and take the next flight home.

It was only later from his sister-in-law that he learned the terrifying news that his wife “might not make it”.

He said: “Whilst I was waiting for the connecting flight to take off from North Carolina my sister-in-law texted to say the twins had been born but there was a chance Sinead wouldn’t make it.

“This is just as we’re taking off and I lost all signal before I could find out any more. You couldn’t make it up. I was in hysterics thinking I might not see my wife again.”

Thankfully, Thomas was able to make it his wife’s side in London and now Sinead and both babies – Roma and Darla – are healthy and safe back at home.

The Tom Skinner interview on the Matt Haycox Show podcast is out today.
