Anne Hegerty has given a refreshingly honest insight into how Asperger’s affects her love life.

The Chase star, 61, who is best known as The Governess, described she struggles with physical intimacy due to the developmental disability, saying when she does have sex ‘I almost zone out’.

Anne, who is currently single, told OK! Magazine: ‘What I have found is that I do fall in love but it tends to not be with people I meet in real life,  I fall in love with historical or fictional characters.

‘People I can put a bit of distance between, I get overwhelmed in the presence of actual people and everything shuts down.

‘I’ve found that with sex, too, it’s like I can’t be fully in it- that much intimacy, I almost zone out.’

Anne also described how she is embracing life in lockdown because she can avoid social situations and spend time on her own.

The television personality was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, which is a form of autism, in 2005 after seeing a TV programme about autism and realising she had all of the symptoms.

Anne previously said on Loose Women: ‘For a long time I didn’t know what the problem was but I realised I had trouble multi-tasking.’

‘Around about 2003 I happened to see a TV programme about little autistic boys and something about it just kind of clicked.

‘I just thought “There is something about the way those boys are behaving that reminds me of me now and of me when I was a child.”

In the spotlight: Anne, aka The Governess, rose to fame as a chaser on The Chase and saw her profile increase dramatically when she appeared on the UK version of I’m A Celebrity in 2018

Anne, aka The Governess, rose to fame as a chaser on The Chase and saw her profile increase dramatically when she appeared on the UK version of I’m A Celebrity in 2018.

The TV star candidly spoke of her Asperger’s before entering the jungle and admitted show producers were ‘anxious’ over how she would cope on the show.

The British-born personality has also said that her Asperger’s has led to her misreading signals from potential love interests in the past, but she also believes it has better aided her quiz knowledge.

So much so, that Anne claims she doesn’t struggle with memory issues as she has the ‘sort of mind that retains things’.

Anne first applied for the UK version of The Chase with the help of a social worker and made her TV debut back in 2010.
