Why Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle Were on Different Balconies for Remembrance Sunday

Some royal fans may have been hoping to see Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton standing together at the Remembrance Sunday memorial service at the Cenotaph in London. However, the Duchess of Cambridge stood with Queen Elizabeth and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, while the Duchess of Sussex took to a balcony with Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and Princess Anne’s husband.

So why weren’t Meghan and Kate on the same balcony for the event? The answer is actually pretty simple and drama-free. As Hello! magazine reports, royals stand according to their order of precedence in the royal family.

Duchess Kate took the place of Prince Philip when the queen’s husband retired from royal duties, and it makes sense that she was given the spot seeing as her husband, Prince William, will one day be king. As Prince Charles’s wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall has a spot next to the queen as her husband will also one day be on the throne.

Rather than hinting at some familial drama, the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex were abiding by the royal family’s rules regarding hierarchy and order of precedence.
