Baby name consultant reveals bizarre trend behind popular names and adds warning
The criteria behind what makes a baby name meaningful has become a little weirder.
Forget simply choosing a name which you and your partner like – according to baby name consultant Sherri Suzanne, parents-to-be are now thinking in slightly different terms.
Specifically, what sort of name will make their little one stand out on social media.
While this has become a trend, Sherri also has an important warning for expectant mums and dads.
Names which have increased in popularity recently are Bentley, Paisley and Hartley, all of which deviate from more traditional names.
Sherri, who can command hundreds of pounds for assisting parents with their baby name choice via her My Name for Life website explains to the Daily Star:
"Ava and Benjamin are two of today’s leaders.
"Ava is the influence behind names like Aviana, Avalyn, Eva, Evie, Evelyn and now Ada.
"Parents who’d otherwise choose Benjamin are picking alternatives like Bentley and Benson."
However, while Sherri acknowledges the creativity behind many of these monikers, she does caution parents to not be tempted to plump for more obscure names which they may later regret or which may cause their child probems.
She added: "In an attempt to express individuality, it’s best not to create obscure and convoluted spellings."
"Resist picking names that form jokes, puns, rhymes, or phrases that have strong negative associations."
So what is Sherri’s winning formula?
"I think the recipe for success starts with a name that can be said with confidence – such a name can be a time-honoured classic, a trendy Top 10 or completely unique."
