Spotify star lashes out at Prince Harry and Meghan as $25,000,000 deal ends

Spotify executive Bill Simmons has savagely laid into Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after their podcast was dropped.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed the lucrative deal with the audio streaming giant to host and produce podcasts, estimated to be worth around $25million (£18m), in late 2020.

But on Friday the couple’s content creation label Archewell Audio and Spotify confirmed they had parted ways in a joint statement.

Meghan, 41, had hosted only one series as part of the deal – the podcast Archetypes, which ran for 12 episodes from August 2022, chatting to celebrities, historians and experts about the history of stereotypes levelled against women.

Tennis star Serena Williams, singer Mariah Carey, Paris Hilton and actors Mindy Kaling and Constance Wu were among the guests.

On Friday, Simmons, head of podcast innovation and monetization at Spotify, condemned the pair in an episode of his own podcast.

‘The f***ing grifters. That’s the podcast we should have launched with them,’ he said.

‘I’ve got to get drunk one night and tell the story of the Zoom I had with Harry to try and help him with a podcast idea. It’s one of my best stories.’

Simmons, a sportswriter, founded sports and pop culture website and podcast network The Ringer, and sold it to Spotify in 2020 for $200 million.

It’s not the first time Simmons has had it out for Prince Harry, stating that he was ‘so tired’ of the former royal around the release of his autobiography, Spare.

Back in January, he said on his podcast: ‘Shoot this guy to the sun. I’m so tired of this guy. What does he bring to the table? He just whines about s**t and keeps giving interviews. Who gives a s**t? Who cares about your life? You weren’t even the favourite son.

‘I can’t stand him. So tired. I’m so embarrassed I f**king have to share Spotify with him, the guy sucks.’

In December, Archetypes won the top podcast award at the People’s Choice Award in Los Angeles.

Meghan wrote on the couple’s Archewell website at the time: ‘I loved digging my hands into the process, sitting up late at night in bed, working on the writing and creative.

‘And I loved digging deep into meaningful conversation with my diverse and inspiring guests, laughing and learning with them.

‘It has been such a labour of love.’
