I’m a style pro and these are summer shoes to avoid if you don’t want to look frumpy – and why braided is bad | The Sun

NOW is the best time to buy your summer shoes.

As we reach the end of June the shops go into sale, despite the summer still being in full swing.

You can get yourself one or two pairs of shoes for up to 50% off in some stores and still get lots of opportunities to wear them for the rest of the season.

But when liberating your feet from the constraints of boots and trainers, you should proceed with caution.

Some old summer staples have had their day and the sun has set on certain trends.

To make sure you don’t look outdated, here Fabulous’ fashion editor Clemmie Fieldsend reveals the summer shoes you should avoid if you don’t want to look frumpy and why.

VELCRO

We all know these shoes.

Usually with an incredibly comfortable sole that feels like it's moulded to your foot with Velcro straps that have curled up at the ends due to years of wear.

It’s time to let go and go for buckles instead.

You can buy just as comfortable buckled shoes that will stay looking newer for longer and aren’t as dated.

FAMILY FEUD

The metallic hardwear won’t date meaning you’ll get years of wear out of them.

LATTICED

Whether they’re a style you picked up on a holiday a few years ago, or you bought them more than a few years ago, the braided shoe just doesn’t tick any trend boxes anymore.

Latticed shoes that cage your foot can leave you with dodgy tan lines and haven’t been making waves in fashion for quite some time.

General rule of thumb, if you look down and your feet and it looks like you have a pie crust sitting on top of them, change.

CLEAR PLASTIC

Just a picture of this type of shoe is enough to make my feet hurt.

The plastic digging in and rubbing every part of the skin on your foot, the condensation and the dated look.

Kim Kardashian put this trend to bed back in 2016 when she wore the style in the form of over-the-knee boots.

If wearing summer shoes is to keep you cool and comfortable, don’t wrap them in plastic as it's uncomfortable and these days, naff.

SATIN

Be it heels or sandals when it comes to summer satin should only be in clothing form, unless you're a bride.

Common in Mary Jane form with a T-bar strap, satin shoes were popular in the 1940s to 1950s, not the 21st century.

Switch to a softer, more elegant and modern suede if you can’t get enough of textures.

More supple and comfortable than leather, they're the perfect switch.
