Bananas: Experts explain how to keep the fruit fresh
Banana fans like to stock up with this yellow fruit as this vitamin-filled all-rounder makes an ideal snack for in-between meals and can be enjoyed in countless different dishes.
However, bananas can ripen quickly in certain circumstances, taking them from ripe to overripe in just a matter of hours.
To slow down this process, fresh produce experts at Dole have shared the do’s and don’ts of “correctly” storing bananas.
Households typically store their bananas in a fruit bowl, however, this is a “big no-no” for those who want to slow down the ripening process.
The experts noted that storing bananas next to other fruit, sometimes inadvertently, will ripen them.

They said: “This is a don’t if you want to keep your bananas fresher for longer.”
When purchased from the supermarket, bananas typically come wrapped in plastic. This should be removed immediately when taken home.
The experts urged: “Never store an entire banana in a plastic bag, especially in a warm kitchen.
“These sweet treats will rot very quickly in a warm and moist environment and will be inedible.”

Instead, bananas should be stored at 12°C, as they will “ripen quicker” if they are too warm.
A darker room without direct sunlight is “ideal”. A warm kitchen is therefore the “worst place” for bananas.
Households can leave the skin of the fruit alone if they want to “store bananas correctly”, but they should be hung up to “prevent brown bruises”.
For those who want to store their bananas correctly, they can certainly store them in the fridge.
However, they should be ripe when they are put in the fridge as “they will not ripen any further” in the cool environment.
It doesn’t matter at all if the skin turns brown as a result of the cold, “it will not impair the taste”.
While this will not affect the taste, it does make the fruit look less appealing.
