How to make bubble and squeak with your Christmas dinner leftovers
Christmas Day might be in the rearview, but many of our fridges are still full of the remnants of the big meal.
Bubble and squeak is a tasty and easy way to burn through loads of leftovers at once before they go off.
There are many variations of the recipe that have emerged over the years, but a couple thing remains consistent – traditionally, bubble and squeak is made with food leftover from another meal, and potatoes and veg have been the staple ingredients for over 100 years.
If you want to try your hand at making your own, here’s the way to do it.
How to make bubble and squeak
- Mashed potatoes – if you’ve only got roasties or boiled potatoes, you can mash them up. The result will be more of a bubble and squeak hash. The potato is the glue that holds it all together, so the amount you use should ideally vary depending on the amount of other leftovers you’ve got.
- Veg – traditionally, bubble and squeak is made with shredded cabbage, but feel free to add whatever you’ve got from Christmas dinner – chopped up carrots, sprouts, peas, leeks, kale, parsnips, etc. would do great.
- Leftover meat – if you’ve got any of the roast itself that’s still good to eat, feel free to chop that up an add that too.
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 chopped onion
- Seasoning to taste
If you want, you can also fry an egg or two to have with it while you wait for it to cool off.
To serve, just cut the patty into slices.
