Pubs, bars and restaurants to visit along the London Marathon route
The London Marathon is just days away, so final preparations are underway.
If you’re taking part, you’ve probably already sorted your Friday night meal, your comfiest running shoes and your power running playlist.
But if you’re going along to show your support for a loved one, you might want to make some plans, too – especially as it takes the average runner around four to five hours to complete.
That’s a lot of time to wait around at the barriers.
To make the day a little more comfortable, why not check out some of the brilliant restaurants, pubs and bars along the London Marathon route?
So you can wait for your loved one to reach your chosen spot, but enjoy a comfortable refreshment before or after.
We’ve rounded up some of the best pubs, bars and restaurants along the capital’s route – so you can get booking now.
Start – Greenwich
If you’re waving off people from the starting line in Greenwich, a spot of warming Thai food might be a great option for lunch – especially if it’s cold and wet outside (which the forecast if currently predicting).
Rosa’s Thai is a safe bet delivering on all the culinary classics, including Panang and Massaman curries as well as Pad Thai options.
Mile 8 – Deptford
Grab a pit stop pint, or cocktail, at this lovely bar that specialises in natural wines and small plates. It also has a small but mighty brunch offering – which could work out well for timings, with a 9.40am marathon start time.
Mile 11 – Bermondsey
Need some coffee and a delicious pastry to keep you going? Flor Bakery delivers on all kinds of baked goods – all made using organically-grown wheats and long-straw heritage varieties.
After you’ve waved to your marathon runner, head for a spot of lunch at Bermondsey Larder – headed-up by the talented chef Robin Gill and his wife Sarah. Diners will find the best seasonal produce and a plethora of natural wines – so you can toast to your loved one running.
Highlights include the potato sourdough with rosemary and sage oil, barbequed courgettes with toasted yeas and basil, and Old spot pork with apricot, tenderstem, black pudding and pistachio.
Mile 12 – Tower Bridge
The Coal Shed
Turn up the heat at this place, which champions coal roasted cooking. The menu is inspired by Raz Helalat’s Persian roots and includes 35-day aged sharing steaks and South Coast fish.
Chef Jonny Lake and master sommelier Isa Bal (Fat Duck alumni) head up this venue near Tower Bridge, just minutes from the marathon route. Their creative menu travels to all kinds of regions in the world with ‘drunk’ lobster noodles, poached Cotswold chicken and more.
Mile 18 – Canary Wharf
Boisdale Canary Wharf
While this Scottish spot is best-known for its live music offering in the evenings, it still has plenty to offer in the daytime. The oyster bar, located downstairs, is the perfect celebratory venue to enjoy some shellfish and some fizz.
Mile 19 – West India Quay
Browns Brasserie & Bar
Whether you need a top-up drink or a full meal just after the halfway point, Browns Brasserie & Bar is a great stop-off spot for spectators in Canary Wharf.
Mile 24 – Temple
Mercer Roof Terrace
Located between miles 23 and 24 is this roof terrace, which offers great views of the London skyline and the city streets below – so it’s the perfect location to soak up the buzzing atmostphere.
Mile 25 – Embankment/Charing Cross
Fancy something to take on the go? Pick up a Korean-style hot dog, and other street food, at this snug restaurant.
On the other end of the spectrum, if you want to go all out, why not head to The American Bar and Beaufort Bar at The Savoy? Grab a classic cocktail and toast to your marathon runner.
Gordon’s Wine Bar
Enjoy a leisurely afternoon of cheese and wine at this Embankment favourite. Sit outside on the terrace and you might be able to see some runners head past, or head inside to the vaulted cellars for more atmospheric experience.
Finish – St James
Farzi Cafe – St James
Celebrate the end in style at this pan-Indian restaurant – which takes Indian classics and gives them a modern twist. Feast all sorts, from tandoori paneer and mushroom butter masala and lamb shank nihari, to saag burrata and butter chicken bao. You’ll be spoilt for choice.
