Taste Test: Tikka Masala Sauce
Loyd Grossman Tikka Masala, 350g, €2.85
This dark and rather oily sauce has a vibrant flavour that’s more characterful than any of the other sauces that we tested. It’s richer and substantially higher in calories and sugar too. 147 calories and 9g of sugar per 100g.
Patak’s Tikka Masala, 450g, €2.49 5/10
Our testers were underwhelmed by this tikka masala sauce from Patak’s and some commented on an unpleasant after-taste. There’s quite a sharp citric note too, and the consistency is more solid than creamy. 81 calories and 4.1g of sugar per 100g.
Sharwood’s Tikka Masala, 420g, €2.39
‘Gloopy and bland’ was the verdict from our testers, who said they’d rather eat a plain chicken breast than one doused in this sauce. The lack of flavour and spice may appeal to children, however, but it’s not good. 118 calories and 6g of sugar per 100g.
Geeta’s Spice & Stir Tikka Masala, 350g, €2.79
Our testers were not impressed by this sauce, which has a cloying smell and tastes bland and synthetic. The gimmick is a spice mix that you sprinkle over the chicken after you’ve fried it and before you add the sauce; we found it very hard to open. 99 calories and 4.6g of sugar per 100g.
