Houseplants have grown in popularity in recent years as many more Britons have opted to bring plants inside the home. Contrary to popular belief, the majority of indoor plants are also easy to care for if they are provided the correct location in the home. During the winter months when it is dark and cold, experts are recommending investing in plants that can brighten up any room.

Experts at GardeningExpress have shared top houseplants which can brighten up the dark winter days.

Founder of GardeningExpress, Chris Bonnett, said: “The winter months are hard, it’s cold and it gets dark so early now. Plants and gardening are known to help with our mental health and they lift our mood.

“You shouldn’t have to miss out on this during winter so that’s why we’ve created a list of the best indoor plants that will brighten up your winter days.

“What’s great about these houseplants too is that they don’t require an awful lot of maintenance either, just some occasional watering and sunlight is all they need.

“Plants like the Christmas Cactus and the Cyclamen plant are a great way to bring that outdoor feel into your home with a beautiful pop of colour.”

The Christmas Cactus comes in a variety of bright colours, perfect for brightening up any indoor space during the winter.

It is very happy with some indirect sunlight and watering when the soil is completely dry.

The GardeningExpress added: “A classic Orchid immediately brightens and softens any room.

“Orchids will do fine in your home throughout winter with proper care. Just move it to the brightest room in your home as they love the sun.”

For those looking for something bigger, the experts recommended the Yucca Tree.

They said: “These are classic houseplants that don’t require a lot of care, just make sure you give it some water when it’s looking a little dry.”

One houseplant which is extremely low maintenance is the Snake Plant, also known as the mother-in-law’s tongue.

Its unique shape and bright colours can help to brighten a room and it only needs the occasional watering when the compost looks dry.

GardeningExpress said: “The colour of this plant resembles snakeskin, hence the name, meaning that it will also add some texture to your home.”

For those wanting to bring the outdoors inside, the Cyclamen plant is a great way to do so.

Not only is it easy to care for, it’s bright petals can help to brighten up the home.

The experts also recommended opting for the Sweetheart plant.

They said: “This plant has a gorgeous shine to it, adding some texture and brightness to your home throughout the winter.

“Its name comes from its appearance, which is a cute heart shape. This will require some pinching to keep the shape, but other than that it needs little care.”

Lastly, GardeningExpress said a corn plant is also a great one for those looking for something low maintenance.

The experts said: “To care for a corn plant, try to keep it away from doors and windows as it doesn’t deal well with drafts and direct sun which makes it easy to care for.

“It’s also important to keep this one in well-drained soil and watch how much you water it.

“Yellow leaves will be a key indication of overwatering.”
