British are No1 Black Friday and Cyber Monday spenders in the world, splashing out an average of £327 per person

Our shoppers splash out an average of £327 each during the long pre-Christmas sale weekend, which officially starts today.

Britain’s nearest rival is the US, where customers spend an average of £302 each.

Next come Germans (£279)and Austrians (£260) in the study by global management consultancy Oliver Wyman.

Separate research has warned that around one in ten people buying Black Friday deals online will get damaged goods.

Eight per cent of the £8.1billion-worth of items bought in the UK on the American-inspired discount day will arrive broken.

Homeware and kitchenware products are the most damaged items, followed by electronic and tech goods.

Nearly a third are damaged beyond use, according to packaging firm DS Smith.

Yet 40 per cent of us think that seeking a refund is too much hassle.
