Protective hair styles and how to care for them

With her decades of experience Mo has some tips when it comes to the care of your own natural hair, especially if you're choosing a protective hairstyle to wear.

Common mistakes

"When it comes to protective styles the most common mistake people make is that they leave it in for far too long," Molecia explains.

"Depending on the style, box braids I say max to leave it in for is eight weeks. Any longer and can cause major damage and breakage. Crochet faux locs can last between eight to ten weeks providing you're moisturising your scalp as you go."

She adds: "Crochet curls I say about six to eight weeks depending on how good you take care of your curls."

Wrap your hair and do not wash extensions

Molecia says that as well as leaving in your protective styles for far too long, people also don't wrap their hair.

By wrapping your hair with a scarf or bonnet it can shield and help keep your hair stay hydrated.

She adds: "And one of the biggest ones that I personally don’t agree with is, washing your hair with extensions in as it can cause really bad breakage if not done properly."

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise!

If you have a protective style in moisturise your scalp, if you don't moisturise your hair! Molecia explains the best ways to moisturise all types of hair from 2a all the way to 4c.

"When it comes to natural hair the key is moisturising your hair and ensuring that you give your hair hot oil hair treatments , or protein treatments and steams!

"Hydro steams are the way forward because it absolutely helps natural hair retain moisture and helps with managing your natural hair and hydration. It’s good to invest in a good hair steamer.

She adds: "I’m old school I always say make sure you oil your scalp (carrot oil, olive oil, avocado oil, castor oil, coconut oil or argan oil) which ever oil that’s suited make sure you’re moisturising your scalp and using like a hair cream or hair butter to moisturise your hair itself."
