Get your motor road-ready for a holiday in Britain with these savvy tips

AFTER MONTHS of being at home we can start planning holidays –  in Britain, at least.

In which case it’s quite likely you will want to travel by car.

But chances are your motor hasn’t had many long trips for a while, so get road-ready with these savvy tips.

TYRE-D OUT: Need a new tyre but not sure of the type required for your car?

Head to – type in your reg and it will offer a selection suitable for you.

Currently, you can get 5.5 per cent of what you spend back via Topcashback.

LIGHT RELIEF: Dull headlights can leave your car looking in need of a revamp, but this is easily fixed at home.

Spruce them up with a restoration kit. I like the T-Cut Headlight Restoration Kit, £9.25 at, cheaper than the popular Meguiars Two Step Headlight Restoration Kit, £28.49 at

CLEAN UP: We’ve all been there – you park under a tree and are left with bird poo and tree sap splatters.

Don’t let this sit on your car’s paintwork for a long time as it could erode the paint.

Clean it off by stirring 200ml of dish soap and two tablespoons of baking soda (this neutralises the acidity of the dish soap) into a bucket of water.

Then, pour this over the mess and let it soak for a couple of minutes before rinsing.

GLASS ACT: You should get new windscreen wipers around every six months or so – but this doesn’t need to be left to your mechanic.

Make sure you follow your owner’s manual but, generally, you can lift and remove old blades yourself.

On most models, you’ll see a tab on the underside of the wiper.

Pushing this will remove the old blade and you can then attach and secure the new one in its place.

Wipers will depend on your car, but check out – I’ve spotted some great deals with up to 50 per cent off, plus free standard delivery.

You can also get 20 per cent off your first order when you sign up.
