A kind-hearted grandad has suffered facial injuries and a fractured arm after falling down at his granddaughter’s sports day.
James Kewley, 46, from Malton, North Yorkshire, promised to run the race after his five-year-old granddaughter, Ella, begged him to take part on June 16.
The speedy toddler came first place in all her races that day, as did her mother, Georgia Kewley, 25 – and grandfather James was hoping to make it a triple win for the family.
James, who runs a construction company, whizzed ahead before unluckily tripping on a bump in the grass, which left him with a black eye and a fractured arm ‘twice the size’.
Far from a sore loser, James says the ordeal was ‘all in good spirit’ after he had been patched up.
He explained: ‘The grass was so dry. I must have hit a bump and I crushed my arm.
‘It was twice the size. It was really swollen. There was a bone sticking out.
‘They told me it looks like a fracture. But it will repair.
‘I also have a black eye. It’s all in good spirit’.
A quick visit to Malton Community Hospital in North Yorkshire revealed that he had likely suffered a fracture.
He has since returned to work and will have to go back in for an an x-ray to confirm the injury.
Georgia, a labourer, said she was in utter shock when her father fell at the last hurdle of the race.
She added: ‘Ella was begging him. She kept saying, “can you do it for me grandad?”
‘When he fell I was shocked. All his weight went on his arm.

‘As he sat up his arm was all twisted. But he’s okay and sees the funny side.
‘At least he came in some sort of place’.
The proud grandad says he’s in no hurry to take part in sport’s day next year, especially without a bit of practice.
He said: ‘Ella had her head in her hands when I fell.
‘I’m not sure I’ll do it next year. Unless I’ve had a bit of training’.
In another sport’s day mishap, a hilarious video shows a mother face-planting during the parents’ race at her daughter’s school sports day – and even mooned the crowd.
According to the red-faced mother (pictured), she ‘just tripped over [her] own feet’ during the ill-fated race
Katie Hannaford, 36, was left red-faced after her eight-year-old convinced her to run last week.
Funny footage shows the mum, from Basildon, Essex, lining up in the third lane from the left.
The race then started and Katie, who was wearing a blue dress, dropped to the back, before falling to the floor.
Unfortunately, her dress came up over her head and revealed her underwear for all the crowd to see.
Luckily, homeware company owner Katie saw the funny side, describing her trip as ‘hilarious’.
