Most of us try to get the household chores done as quickly as we can.

But yoga teacher Tamara Jones prefers to stretch it out.

From doing the dishes and splits at the same time to washing her windows with her feet while in a handstand, she goes out of her way to include yoga postures in her housework.

And her demonstrations have helped her clean up on social media, too, where she now has 261,000 Instagram followers for her @tammyrara account.

‘I call it a whistle-while-you-work mentality,’ says Mrs Jones, who lives in Manchester with her husband and their two sons aged 12 and 13.

‘It adds a bit of sparkle to the mundane.’ The thirty-something, who has a busy life running round after her sons and teaching all day, adds: ‘A lot of things we think make life easier make it harder in the long run – sitting in our big comfy armchairs, driving everywhere.

‘It makes us seize up when really we need movement to stay young. 

‘So instead of trudging around the house with a steam mop, integrate a little bit of stretching and extra movement to make it a workout as well as a task.’

Recent research supports the health benefits of moving more.

A study of 5,500 women by the University of California found those who did at least four hours of ‘daily life movement’ – from cooking to gardening or washing the dog – cut their risk of death from a heart attack or stroke by almost two thirds.
