I have finally found dream woman but my children don't want me to be with her

DEAR DEIDRE: A YEAR ago, I started seeing a lovely, funny and strong woman.

She’s made me so happy and we plan to move in together.

But my family is trying to break us up.

I am 42 and have been separated from my ex, who is 43, for almost two years.

I have three teenage children from my ex, who are 13, 15 and 17.

I see them every other weekend and during the school holidays.

Recently, they have started saying they don’t like my girlfriend and don’t want to visit me if she is there.

My girlfriend, who is 38, is very kind to them, but I think they are being influenced by their gran and auntie – my mum and sister – who want me to get back together with my ex.

I have heard they’ve been saying things like my new relationship is just a phase and I’m only in it for the sex.

It’s now causing problems between me and my girlfriend. I don’t know what to do. I don’t want to lose her or my children.

DEIDRE SAYS:  Most children of separated parents would like to see their mum and dad reunite. But that’s often not realistic.

You need to convince them you are happy with your partner and that it is always better to have two happy parents apart, than two unhappy parents together.

Show them my support pack, Worried About Mum and Dad, which explains more.

Find a quiet moment to tell your girlfriend that you are going to talk to the children about your future together.
