‘Mary Poppins Returns’ a hit with early viewers: ‘Practically perfect in every way’
Dick Van Dyke looks exactly the same in the "Mary Poppins Returns" trailer as he did in the original film.
A spoonful of sugar won’t be necessary for “Mary Poppins Returns” to go down as a hit.
At least that’s according to many early viewers of the film. They’re tweeting that the sequel to the 1964 Julie Andrews Disney musical is “practically perfect in every way.”
Critics and guests of the “Mary Poppins Returns” premiere started to share their reactions after the film screened in Los Angeles Thursday night. The sentiment was largely positive, with many on Twitter noting that new Poppins actress, Emily Blunt, is a standout in the joyful movie.
Here are a few of the early takes of the film shared on social media:
Actor Josh Gad said, “Believe the hype.”

Actress Beth Behrs called the premiere “My favorite movie-going experience since childhood.”
Practically perfect in every way. My favorite movie going experience since childhood. If you don’t leave with a smile on your face and the warmest, gooey-est feeling in your heart then we can’t be friends. I loved every minute. ????????#marypoppinsreturnspic.twitter.com/kwdLqBzv9S
Writer Ben Mekler called “Mary Poppins Returns” an Oscar contender that’s “sheer joy” and “magic.” He said, “A sequel this late shouldn’t be this good and yet…it absolutely is.”
The Oscar race just got a BIG shake-up, because #MaryPoppinsReturns is sheer joy. Some of the most effortlessly charming (and catchy!) songs, performances, and BMX stunts I’ve seen on film in ages. A sequel this late shouldn’t be this good and yet…it absolutely is. It’s magic.
Blogger Amiyrah Martin had three adjectives for the film: whimsical, sensational and spectacular.
Whimsical – Sensational – Spectacular = #MaryPoppinsReturns in 3 words. You have to see it! #MaryPoppinsReturnsEventpic.twitter.com/V0IPW1yCXT
Journalist Nick Kazden called it a “freaking treat” with a “fierce and amazing” Emily Blunt.
#MaryPoppinsReturns is a freaking treat. I was really worried but man this movie is enjoyable as heck and pays the original justice. Emily Blunt is fierce and amazing and I think I'm in love pic.twitter.com/wk3KFcwVOw
However, not everyone thought the film was supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
YouTuber Rama said the sequel bored him. “The songs were too long,” he complained.
Tho I liked #EmilyBlunt as #MaryPoppins, unfortunately the movie #MaryPoppinsReturns bored me. The songs were too long. And they didn't feel like they were part of the characters' journey

Critic Robert Daniels called it a “supremely average” movie with Blunt as “the only redeeming quality”.
So I wasn't a big fan of #MaryPoppinsReturns . In fact, I think it's a supremely average, loud, bombastic, hollow, mess, from the songs to the story. The only redeeming quality is Emily Blunt.
