My phobia of needles is stopping me from getting the Covid vaccine

DEAR DEIDRE: MY needle phobia is so extreme that even the thought of a Covid injection makes me panic.

I’m a 25-year-old woman and have been called for my first dose.

When I got the text, I had a full-blown panic attack. Ever since, I’ve been feeling sick with anxiety.

I’m not an anti-vaxxer at all – I’m just terrified of needles.

I always have been, and I don’t know why. It isn’t rational.

I’ve even avoided travelling to some countries where vaccines are needed.

My friends don’t understand why I’m so scared. They say the jab takes just a second and doesn’t hurt.

How can I overcome this fear?

DEIDRE SAYS: Needle phobias are fairly common, and there are things that can help.

Talk to your doctor about your fears. A type of counselling called cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) may be useful.

Hypnotherapy can also help people to overcome their phobias.

If you pluck up the courage to have your vaccine, ask them to prescribe some Emla cream which numbs your arm, so you won’t feel the jab.

Listening to music on headphones will help to distract you, too. Read my support pack Fears And Phobias for more information and advice.
