Okay, So Apparently Nutella Says We’ve Been Pronouncing It Wrong This Whole Time

Hands up, who loves Nutella? It’s just so damn versatile. Nutella brownies? YUM. Nutella cookies? Effing exquisite. And don’t even get us started on Nutella cheesecake. *Eyes roll to back of head* But there’s one thing that’s always bothered us about Nutella. It seems as though not one person is 100% sure about how to pronounce it.

Is it NUT-ella? NOU-tella? Or maybe even NEW-tell-uh?

Well, the good news is we’ve finally been told once and for all what we should be saying, and it’s come straight from the horse’s mouth. So to speak…

Nutella recently did a poll to find out what Brits call the iconic chocolate and hazelnut spread. So, 78% call it “NUT-ella”, compared to just 12% who say “NOU-tella”. Whilst 6% think “NEW-tell-uh” is the correct pronunciation and the remaining 3% simply haven’t got the slightest clue.

Well, Nutella has finally confirmed that the emphasis should actually be put on the ‘N’ and ‘OU’ – so the correct pronunciation is…

“NOU- tella”.

So… have you been saying it right this whole time?

James Stewart, Marketing Director for Nutella, Ferrero UK & Ireland, said: “As Nutella is enjoyed in every corner of the world, there has long been some fun debates on how it should be pronounced. Our Nutella team wanted to share how we pronounce the iconic spread’s name. We emphasize the ‘NOU’ in ‘NOU-tella’, but we don’t mind how our fans decide to pronounce it—the most important thing to us is that you enjoy it!”
