Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s black Labrador’s name has finally been revealed – and it was inspired by the couple’s first trip together to Africa.
According to People, the bombshell biography Finding Freedom, written by royal journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, confirmed the pup’s name was Pula.
And it seems the name has special meaning for the Duke, 35, and Duchess of Sussex, 38, because Pula is the official currency of Botswana – which is the first trip the royal pair went on after they started dating four years ago.
After celebrating Meghan’s 36th birthday in Botswana, the couple returned a year later to work with wildlife conservation initiative, Elephants Without Borders.
The word also means ‘rain’ in Setswana and because rain is scarce in Botswana’s desert climate, it’s believed to be very valuable, the publication reported.

Shortly after tying the knot in May 2018, the couple welcomed a black Labrador rescue into their home – but they never revealed its name and so the special meaning was unknown, until now.
Prince Harry previously confirmed that the couple’s 2016 trip to Botswana was an important milestone in their relationship.
In their 2018 engagement interview, the royal recalled how he ‘convinced’ Meghan to fly out there to join him on a trip and said they spent a romantic five days camping out under the stars.
‘It was I think about three, maybe four weeks [after their first date] that I managed to persuade her to come and join me in Botswana,’ he said at the time.
‘And we, we camped out with each other under the stars, we spent, she came and joined me for five days out there, which was absolutely fantastic.’
And to mark Prince Harry’s birthday last September, Meghan reportedly recreated their romantic Botswana trip ‘under the stars’ at home.

‘Meghan recreated their Botswana camping adventures in their backyard. It’s a place that means so much to them—and to Harry in particular—so Meghan wanted to bring that happy place to him on his day so she set up a tent, got sleeping bags, cooked dinner, and recreated Botswana where they fell in love,’ a source previously told People.
The country has a special significance for Prince Harry, who first visited Botswana shortly after his mother Princess Diana’s death, when he travelled there with his brother and father.
Harry fell in love with the country on that first trip and has since returned regularly, getting increasingly involved with wildlife conservation efforts in Botswana.
When it came to finding the perfect engagement ring for Meghan, Harry even chose to source a diamond from Botswana – which he has previously referred to as his ‘second home’.
The stone was paired with two diamonds from a tiara that belonged to Princess Diana.
Meghan, who became patron of the animal welfare organization Mayhew in January 2019, previously adopted pup, Bogart, as well as her beagle, Guy.
