Pub slammed for ‘Britain’s earliest happy hour’ with £1.70 pints from 9am-11am
A bar has been slammed by alcohol campaigners for offering new "happy hour" mornings with cheap pints from as low as £1.70.
Uptown Bar in the seaside town of Great Yarmouth is now offering boozers half priced drinks between 9am to 11am everyday of the week.
Customers can enjoy a pint of Fosters for just £1.70 or John Smith's for £1.90.
The price of a beer goes up to £2.50 for a Fosters and £2.70 for a John Smith's after happy hour until the bar closes at 1am.
A post on the pub’s Facebook page reads: “Ice cold Fosters and John Smiths only £1.90 before 11am along with lots of other offers
“Amstel and Heineken alcohol free £1.70 all day.
“Beer Garden open its going to be a hot one. See you all soon.”
Videos on the bar's Facebook page show punters dancing and falling over as they enjoy half-priced beers.
The happy hour event has been slammed by alcohol campaigner groups, who argue that morning booze feasts do more harm than good.
A spokeswoman from campaigning charity Alcohol Change UK said: “Short-term price drops like this can encourage people to drink too much at any time of the day.
“Broadly speaking, the cheaper alcohol is, the more alcohol harm we see. That’s why the Scottish and Welsh governments are acting to address this with minimum price measures.
“It’s time for the whole of the UK to do so too."
In 2017, there have been 7,697 alcohol-related deaths, according to charity Alcohol Change UK.
The Department for Health and Social Care estimated in July that the NHS spends £3.5 billion a year on alcohol-related problems of the overall £129 billion budget.
Meanwhile hospital admissions for alcohol-related cancers have increased by 22% in the last ten years.
Dawn Titterington’s son Matthew Stiebrins died of alcoholism in 2012, aged just 29.
Dawn, 58, branded the early morning happy hour at the Great Yarmouth boozer “disgusting”.
She said: “If you can’t smoke in a pub, why should you be able to buy a pint at 9am?
“The day’s a write-off, how can you go and work a job when you’ve been drinking? It’s disgusting.”
However, some have praised the morning happy hour for creating a good atmosphere in the community.
