Royal Mail warning: Shoppers urged to ‘post early’ amid Christmas parcel delays

Royal Mail: Couriers experiencing delays over Christmas

With Christmas just one week away, delivery companies have noticed an increase in demand as many Britons rush to send gifts. When is the last date to post items before Christmas?

Coronavirus lockdown measures across the country have continually changed.

With retail shops being closed for many months this year, more shoppers appear to have turned to buying online.

Sales for ordering online jumped 50 percent in the first two weeks of December on last year, BBC reported.

The rise in demand and coronavirus restrictions may have left some couriers struggling to keep up.

Reporting on BBC, business correspondent Emma Simpson stated: “On the road the vans are full.

“This shows posties are grappling with an unprecedented increase in parcels this year. It has meant some delays for customers.”

A Royal Mail statement added: “All delivery companies are experiencing exceptionally high volumes this year.”

The postal service stated most services are running as usual despite the high demand.

When is the last date to post for Christmas?

With an increase in demand, those hoping to send parcels could benefit from doing it quickly.

Royal Mail has shared the recommended dates to send a parcel to ensure it arrives quickly.

“Allow plenty of time for posting,” a statement on Royal Mail website said.

“Please post items and gifts for Christmas early, particularly for international deliveries.

“Ongoing covid restrictions, reduced air and freight capacity, high volumes and winter weather conditions are all impacting transportation and local delivery across the globe.”

The website has listed the last possible dates to send items for Christmas.

For Second Class and Second Class Signed For, Britons should send today, Friday 18, at the latest.

If sending First Class, First Class Signed For and Royal Mail Tracked 48, the final recommended date for sending is Monday December 21.

Royal Mail Tracked 24 can be sent until Tuesday December 22 and Special Delivery Guaranteed can be posted until Wednesday December 23.

However, customers could avoid delays by sending items as early as possible.

The statement added: “In these uncertain times it’s advisable to post as early as possible to ensure your Christmas letters and parcels reach their destination in good time.”
