Royals who have broken protocol wearing leather, from Sophie Wessex to Princess Eugenie

Whilst being a part of the Royal Family has its obvious perks, it also comes with a strict set of rules – especially when it comes to fashion. From wearing nude tights to modest outfit choices, there’s no shortage of protocol and this includes the type of fabrics they choose wear also.

The female members of the family are expected to avoid wearing leather completely as it’s not deemed to be “ladylike” and isn’t a traditional fabric associated with the royal wardrobe. However, in recent years, we’ve seen many royals sport the daring trend in their everyday outfits.

Take Sophie, Countess of Wessex for example, who last week stepped out in New York in a head-to-toe leather look. The mum-of-two ripped up the rulebook as she stunned in a black Loewe belted midi dress, teamed with a pair of Yves Saint Laurent black leather ankle boots.

She’s not the only royal to break this rule either. Everyone from Meghan Markle, to The Duchess of Cambridge and even Princess Diana are known fans of the leather look and have each rocked the trend in their own unique and stylish way.

Whether it’s a chic midi skirt or a full-blown leather look, take a look below at how our favourite royal ladies have broken the rules and worn the trend..

Sophie, Countess of Wessex

Although Sophie broke the rules with her choice of fabric, she made sure to keep her look modest by wearing a long-sleeve top underneath her fashion-forward dress. The Countess finished her outfit off with a cream Max Mara coat and a stylish snakeskin clutch bag, while accessorising with a gold pendant necklace and drop earrings.

With The Countess taking on more royal duties, perhaps she's attempting to steal the style crown from The Duchess Of Cambridge?

Meghan Markle

Whilst Meghan was expected to follow fashion protocol during her time as a royal, it didn’t stop her from showcasing her own personal style. In 2018, on a visit to Sussex, the star turned heads in this green leather midi skirt, matching blouse and nude court heels.

The whole ensemble is giving us serious Rachel Zane from Suits vibes and although it doesn’t meet royal requirements, it’s perfect for anyone’s workwear wardrobe.

Kate Middleton

The only time we see The Duchess wearing leather these days is with her handbags, belts and shoes – but when it comes to outdoor activities, she loves rocking her Really Wild’s Nubuck Leather Gilet,£495 herefor a chic, casual look.

For a visit to Widehorizons Margaret McMillan House in Kent in 2012, Kate teamed her leather gilet with a cosy, v-neck jumper, a pair of navy skinny jeans and some Wellington boots.

Princess Beatrice

Another stylish royal showing us how to nail the leather trend is Princess Beatrice. The royal isn’t afraid to experiment with fashion and this mini skirt and jacket combo proves just that.

For a visit to Soho House in London back in 2016, Beatrice also ignored the strict hemline rule a-line leather mini skirt, which she teamed with a varsity-style tweed bomber jacket and heels.

Princess Eugenie

V-neck, short-sleeves, leather – we’re not sure if this outfit lives up to royal protocol, but we think Princess Eugenie looks amazing in this leather wrap dress. The belt-detail ensured the entire look is super on-trend.

We love the way the royal has kept her accessories to a minimum, teaming her leather frock with a simple pair of black court heels.

Princess Diana

Sure, we all remember Princess Diana’s ‘revenge dress’ but the late royal showcased a whole variety of rule-breaking looks during her time in the spotlight.

One of our favourites? This leather jacket she sported during a ski holiday in Austria with Prince William and Harry. Keeping it cool and cosy, the star paired her oversized jacket with a denim shirt and matching jeans – all finished off with some practical white snow boots.
