Tenerife ablaze! Celebs who’ve holidayed on Spanish island hit by wildfires – is it safe?
As images of the devastating wildfires continuing to grip Tenerife emerged this week, it’s safe to say it’s a far cry from the usual sun-soaked holiday snaps we’re more used to seeing at this time of year.
The popular Canary Island has long been a firm hit with the public and celebrities alike, with many of our favourite stars having enjoyed the stunning scenery and warm hospitality of locals over the years.
However, instead of encouraging people to visit the popular tourist spot, members of the public have been asked to reconsider their trips, as more than 7,500 people have been evacuated or ordered to stay indoors as the worst wildfire in at least four decades ravages the island.
The fires come just months after stars such as Jaqueline Jossa, Paris Fury and Helen Flanagan were enjoying holidays there, and just weeks since Amy Childs had jetted off on holiday with her three-month-old twins.
While scenes of our favourite stars sunbathing or walking along the beach have been commonplace in the past, they now paint a very different picture to an Island that has been ravaged by flames.
Here, we take a closer look at some of their trips prior to the fires hitting, and ask – should tourists still go ahead with their holiday plans?
Helen Flanagan
Ex-Coronation Street star Helen Flanagan, who famously played Rosie Webster in the soap, has long been a fan of Tenerife for its impeccable sunshine and lavish resorts.
Over the years, the mum of 3 has visited Tenerife on multiple occasions, with one of her most recent trips taking place in April 2023 when she visited the renowned celebrity villa, Casa Amore.
Posting snaps of her visit on social media at the time, Helen showed off her sizzling figure in a variety of stylish swimsuits, and couldn’t appear happier as she relaxed in the island paradise.
Jacqueline Jossa
Jacqueline Jossa was also another star who couldn’t help but be drawn to the charm and appeal of Tenerife, when she and her family jetted off to the sun soaked location earlier this year.
The formerEastEndersstar, who played the role of Lauren Branning for over ten years, shared a glimpse into her sunny family holiday as the Easter break began back in March.
Accompanied by her two daughters Ella, 8 and Mia, 4, on the trip Jacqueline was also joined by her parents Selina and John Jossa.
During the trip, Jacqueline managed to shoot several photos for her upcoming swimwear collection and also made the most of the resort she was staying in, as she and her daughters headed out on multiple day trips to explore the surrounding area.
Paris Fury
Tenerife also proved to be a popular destination with the Fury family, with proud parents Tyson and Paris Fury having taken their six children on holiday to the Island at the very start of the year.
In a new photo shared on Instagram at the time, Paris cut a casual figure in a pair of black sweatpants and a crop top while adding a hint of glamour with her tresses in a curly blowdry, while Tyson smiled at the camera in a blue jumper, jeans and crossbody Gucci bag.
Meanwhile the kids were all in matching tracksuits, with the girls in pink ones with graffiti hearts on them, while the boys matched in comfy green outfits with a statement white stripe down the side.
Danny Jones
McFly singer Danny Jones was another star who couldn’t get enough of Tenerife, and was even holidaying there just last week, meaning he and his young family had dodged the flames by a mere matter of days.
Despite missing the fires however, the trip wasn’t completely without incident, as Danny’s young son Cooper began vomiting on holiday and ended up in a hospital bed.
Taking to Instagram to clue fans in on what was happening, Danny’s wife Georgia wrote: "Sorry I left you all on a bit of a cliff hanger. This little just before we were due to fly home got a bit sick… And when I say a bit sick… He pretty quickly went from this…"
Posting another photo of him in bed and connected to a drip, she wrote with a teary eye and broken heart emoji: "To this… But goodness he was so so brave. I think had this of been England it wouldn't of been quite as dramatic but I guess they have to be so careful with dehydration in little ones in hot countries. He wasn't keeping water down so was pretty dehydrated and lethargic." [sic]
Amy Childs
Another star that only narrowly avoided the devastating wildfires is The Only Way Is Essex star Amy Childs, who visited the island last month along with her baby twins, just three months after welcoming them into the world.
The mum-of-four, who welcomed twins Billy and Millie into the world back in the beginning of April, has recently been spending some quality time with her young family while on holiday in Tenerife.
While on the trip, 33 year old Amy gave her 860,000 Instagram followers a peek inside the wholesome holiday by posting a series of snaps and videos from the summer getaway.
In one snap, Amy looked radiant as she sported a chic black one shoulder swimsuit, which she wore while on her first holiday with the twins earlier this year, accompanying the look with a pair of dark oversized sunglasses.
Meanwhile in another image shared at the time, proud mum Amy could be seen sweetly fussing over her two little ones as they relaxed beside the pool.
So, is it safe to still visit Tenerife?
While the airports in Tenerife are still operating as normal, officials in the country are still warning that the situation has a “huge potential” to worsen, meaning safety cannot be guaranteed for any travellers.
Canary Islands president Fernando Clavijo even said on Wednesday that “The fire is out of control, the outlook is not positive.”
President of Tenerife Council Rosa Davila also made a similar warning as she said: “The blaze has huge potential”, particularly as strong winds are forecasted for the coming days.
While this isn’t the best news for travellers hoping for a last minute getaway before being back to school run in September, many news sources say it's worth checking with your travel insurance provider as to whether you can cancel and gain a refund.
Some airlines and travel providers may be offering more flexibility with booking policies as a result of the extreme circumstances of the European heatwave and resulting wildfires, however this isn’t guaranteed.
So far, the UK Foreign Office has yet to issue any specific travel guidance on visiting Tenerife – their website provides further info.
