A young mum said she was left feeling like a ‘prat’ after rushing her baby to A&E fearing he had a hole in his mouth – only to discover it was just a red sticker
Becky Stiles, 24, from Chingford, Essex, panicked when she was changing her 10-month-old son Harvey’s nappy and spotted a ‘hole’ in his mouth and rushed him to A&E
But before she even got into the hospital building a nurse shone a tiny torch into his mouth and revealed the ‘hole’ was just a harmless sticker.
Becky was left feeling embarrassed but said she shared what happened as a warning to other parents to keep stickers away from newborns.
She said: ‘I noticed Harvey needed his nappy changed, as I laid him down I could see a ‘hole’ on the roof of his mouth. I tried to touch it but he just screamed at me, so I made his dad rush over and see it.
‘I’m shaking, sweating and holding back the tears. We put a torch on it to which his dad said “What the hell is that?”

‘I called my mum who told me to phone 111 and as I was waiting for someone to answer my dad told me to take him straight into A&E.
‘So we dropped the two oldest kids off to their grandparents and made the 30 minute drive to our closest A&E hospital.’
Becky, who has two other boys, added: ‘I had phoned all my side of the family to let them know and sent the picture.
‘I also phoned Harvey’s dad’s side of the family to tell them too. Waiting at the main doors of A&E I’m explaining it to a stranger who was waving and speaking to Harvey.
‘When it was our turn to go in we showed the nurses at the door and they were talking about referring him to another ward.

‘One nurse said let me just get my pen torch and have a look. After about 30 seconds of looking she said: “That’s a sticker”.
‘Me being an idiot I was telling her: “No look that’s a hole”. She put her finger in his mouth and hooked it out
‘I laughed, was shaking and so embarrassed. Harvey found it funny too! I told her I felt like a right prat, and that if Covid wasn’t a thing I would hug her.
‘She replied with, “Well I’ve never fixed a cleft palate at A&E doors before”. We all carried on laughing as we made the walk of shame back to the car.
‘In the car I had to swallow my pride even more and make all the phone calls again to let everyone know Harvey didn’t in fact have a hole in his mouth. He had taken a liking to stickers.’
