THE safest airlines in the world have been revealed and two UK carriers have made the cut.

British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are the only two UK airlines featured in the top 20 world’s safest airlines.

Qantas topped the list of the world's safest airlines with Air New Zealand coming in second and Etihad Airways was placed in third.

Meanwhile Virgin Australia/Atlantic snagged the 10th place spot, and British Airways came in at 17th place.

They join other big names like Singapore Airlines, KLM and Qatar Airways in the ranking, which looked at a total of 385 airlines.

Editor-in-Chief Geoffrey Thomas said: "These [20] airlines are standouts in the industry and are at the forefront of safety, innovation, and launching of new aircraft."

According to Mr Thomas, the team used factors such as crashes over the last five years, serious incident over the last two years and audits from aviation’s governing bodies and lead associations.

Other indicators such as expert analysis of pilot training, Covid-19 protocols and fleet age to determine their decision.

Mr Thomas said: "All airlines have incidents every day, and many are aircraft or engine manufacture issues, not airline operational problems.

"It is the way the flight crew handles these incidents that determines a good airline from an unsafe one."
