According to research from Which? the cost of private holiday accommodation in the UK has surged 41 per cent since 2019 pre-Covid, working out to an average £300 extra per week.

This means that a UK break typically costs hundreds more than a trip to an equivalent European getaway, even with flights being included.

The findings were based on comparing the average cost of private holiday rentals, hotels and other expenses in the most popular UK destinations with similar locations abroad, and in almost every case, the UK holiday was more expensive.

Some of the most shocking prices differences include a seven night holiday in Lake Garda in Italy in August which came in at just £632 – while a similar seven nights in the UK at Lake Windermere cost a whopping £2,381.

Similarly, seven nights in Nice at a highly rated hotel would set holidaymakers back £679 – the same in Brighton costs £1,088.

Many Brits have been sticking to the UK for their summer breaks this year due to international travel restrictions.

This has led to a huge surge in demand and complaints about the increasing cost of staycations.

Rory Boland, Which? Travel Editor said: “Holidaying at home has always been expensive, but the situation has become far worse during the pandemic and it’s no wonder many people have felt priced out of a holiday this year."

“The reasons for these higher prices are complex, but it is hard to avoid the conclusion that some unscrupulous accommodation providers are charging over the odds."

“The good news is that there are ways to save on UK holidays. By looking just a few miles down the road from the most popular destinations or travelling out of peak holiday season, holidaymakers can significantly reduce the cost of their trip.”
